Renegade lose Seifert early

By Peter Ryan

It was Tim versus Tom in the second over and Carroll won the battle with Seifert hitting it straight to mid-on after a few wild swings.

Seifert did not pick up the wicket’s pace early and paid the price.

The loss brings Fraser-McGurk to the wicket early. Here is his chance.

Renegades to bat first

By Peter Ryan

Good news for Stars fans as they get the chance to chase whatever the Renegades manage to post in the first innings. They are a better team chasing, as most teams in the BBL are, but have to get the job done.

Josh Brown will face the first ball from... Glenn Maxwell.

Khawaja begins next chapter in style

By Peter Ryan

The Queensland crowd hoped they would have the chance to show their appreciation for retired Test great Usman Khawaja and the veteran did not let them down in the curtain-raiser to the big clash at Marvel Stadium.

Khawaja belted 78 runs off 48 balls to steer the Brisbane Heat to a seven-wicket win over the hapless Sydney Thunder, who could be without Khawaja’s good friend Dave Warner after he hurt his quad during a brilliant innings of 82 for the Sydney side.

With many of the Test stars returning for the final matches of the Big Bash, expect the quality of cricket to improve as people pour into the derby under the roof with close to 40,000 fans expected.

The Melbourne Renegades are living on the edge

By Peter Ryan

Matchwinner Ollie Peake has headed to Zambia for the under-19 World Cup after his heroic, somewhat lucky, performance against the Scorchers when he hit a six off the last ball of the innings to give the Renegades victory.

He might be gone but the inclusion of Ben Doggett who has returned from test duties and the confidence built from two narrow victories means they will lose little.

The real improvement needs to come from Jake Fraser-McGurk who has failed to fire in this tournament with just one score above 14 in his six innings. That’s not the end of the world as Fraser-McGurk hits hard from ball one, but a return to form for him would put the Renegades back in serious contention.

All eyes on Glenn Maxwell

By Peter Ryan

Three runs in three knocks over a total of 10 balls is not a good return from a player as talented as Stars’ danger man Glenn Maxwell.

He needs runs tonight and the Stars need him to go big.

Victorians love him and things can turn quickly but, as I wrote on Thursday night in this piece, he is due. In fact, he is overdue. I’d expect him to settle into his innings if possible tonight when his turn comes to bat.

Welcome to BBL’s Melbourne Derby

By Peter Ryan

From tonight, the Big Bash gets serious.

The Melbourne Renegades have the chance to draw level with the Melbourne Stars on the points table with a match in hand after contrasting weeks for the two Victorian franchises.

The Renegades backed up their derby win at the MCG with a last-ball win over the Perth Scorchers while the Sixers slumped to their third-straight loss with a below-par performance against the Sydney Sixers at the MCG on Thursday night.

Welcome to tonight’s coverage of the BBL. It’s where you can get some light entertainment after a couple of tough days for the state and our thoughts are with those who are impacted by the fires.

We are here for some cricket with the season on the line for both teams. Bring it on.
