TRY: Dolphins on fire as Katoa, Nikorima combine

By

Oh that is slick. The Dolphins are in attacking range after an Angus Crichton error and the two halves combine superbly, Isaiya Katoa putting a chip kick over the top and Kodi Nikorima running past him to regather and score untouched. Lovely stuff.

The hosts haven’t wasted time in doubling their half-time lead and they are well in control now.

TRY: Dolphins make perfect start to second half after Roosters lose Savala

The Dolphins kick off the second half and the Roosters have it all to do – even more so now with the news that Hugo Savala is out of the game after failing his HIA. They can activate an 18th man now with two plays lost through head knocks.

But they have more immediate concerns now with Kodi Nikorima sending Oryn Keeley through a gap, and the second-rower finds dynamic fullback Trai Fuller who scoots away to score.

Both teams have controlled the ball pretty well so far but the Dolphins’ superior running game has them on top at half-time.

Half-time: Roosters go close but Dolphins in control

A nice line break down the right flank from teenage rookie Rex Bassingthwaighte gives the Roosters another scoring chance but it breaks down after that, and it looks like they’ll finish the first half scoreless.

Cody Ramsey has one last potshot at a potential two-point field goal from his own side of halfway, but it hits the left post.

The Dolphins have been the more dangerous of the two teams, with the Roosters obviously missing their seven Origin stars, but a 12-point half-time deficit is not a huge gap these days and it’s anyone’s game heading into the second half.

Roosters cop another head knock in the backline

By

Now it’s Tricolours five-eighth Hugo Savala who goes off after a head knock, thanks to the independent doctor, and he’ll undergo an HIA. The Chooks have already lost centre Reece Foley for the game after a head knock.

The Roosters go on the attack again but their momentum comes to a crashing halt thanks to a crunching tackle from Kurt Donoghoe on Salesi Foketi, and Daly Cherry-Evans’ last-tackle grubber is snapped up by Isaiya Katoa.

Roosters lose centre to head knock

By

A blow for the Roosters now with young centre Reece Foley going in for a low tackle on Jamayne Isaako and copping a blow to the head from Isaako’s hip. He’s sprawled out on the turf for a moment and looks a little dazed, and is now going off for a HIA.

In fact it’s a category 1 head knock, so he’s out of this game. The Roosters will need to reshuffle their backline.

As play continues the Tricolours go pretty close to getting their first try, Cody Ramsey leaping high to get a hand to Daly Cherry-Evans’ bomb, but he can’t hold onto it.

TRY: Farnworth grabs Dolphins’ second

By

The Dolphins’ backline is pretty intact despite missing five Origin players and it works a treat here – the ball quickly going through the hands of Jeremy Marshall-King, Isaiya Katoa, Connelly Lemuelu and Kodi Nikorima before Herbie Farnworth is put into space down the left sideline.

Farnworth scores in the corner, Jamayne Isaako hoops in a sideline conversion and the Dolphins suddenly have a good lead.

TRY: Katoa goes himself to give Dolphins the lead

By

A penalty against Salesi Foketi gets the Dolphins into attacking territory, but their raid is defused by some great work from young Roosters winger Rex Bassingthwaighte to wrap up counterpart Tevita Naufahu on the last tackle.

But the hosts get another chance when Tommy Talau spills an Isaiya Katoa bomb. The halfback has been dangerous for the Dolphins and he has the game’s first try, drifting left and throwing a dummy before slicing through from close range.

Jamayne Isaako converts from just to the left of the posts.
