There’s confusion as Junior Alonso fouls Jamal Musiala but also gets his foot stepped on in the process. Germany win the free kick but Alonso stays down for a while. It’s certainly getting fiery between both teams as the clock winds down, especially on this side of the pitch. Not long after winning a free kick, Musiala concedes one for a foul on Galarza, which he receives a yellow card for, too.

Play is paused while Galarza gets treated on the pitch and a member of each team’s staff receives a yellow card for their protests. Just as soon as Galarza gets back up, he receives a yellow card of his own for a foul on – you guessed it – Musiala.

Germany have won a corner and it’s their best chance of this half. Gill catches the header, just ahead of the goal line. Germany win a free kick, conceded by Galarza on Havertz as an official indicates there will be two minutes added to this half.

Nadiem Amiri takes it, firing with his right foot into the side netting.

That’s it – this match is heading to a penalty shootout.

Paraguay 1-1 Germany in second half of extra time

We’ve got 15 minutes left before this match heads to a penalty shootout.

Paraguay’s luck looks like it’s slightly better in this half, winning a free-kick and subsequent corner early on before Germany win two of their own. Neither side have found a goal yet and Germany make a double substitution. Nadiem Amiri comes on for Florian Wirtz and Malick Thiaw replaces Antonio Rudiger.

Drama as German goal in extra time scrubbed out by VAR

By

Germany win a third corner inside the first 15 minutes of extra time and they capitalise on this one to go up 2-1 against Paraguay.

It’s too simple. Nathaniel Brown takes the corner and Jonathan Tah – tall and unmarked – runs from the back post to find the ball, heading it in to the centre of the goal and out of Gill’s reach.

But their celebrations are paused as the VAR officials check the goal before play can resume. There’s hope for Paraguay as the referee leaves the pitch to check the goal. They’re checking it for a foul on Paraguay’s keeper Orlando Gill, who falls before Tah scores.

The goal is disallowed! Paraguay are not out yet!

Paraguay scramble against Germany in extra time

All the action has been inside Paraguay’s box so far with some frantic defending required from the South American side.

Finally after five minutes, Paraguay get some reprieve when Germany have possession in the midfield instead of their box. It doesn’t last long, however, when Nick Woltemade fires a shot which is blocked by Jose Canale and goes out for Germany’s second corner of extra time.

Paraguay make a double substitution to get some fresh legs on. Antonio Sanabria comes on for Damian Bobadilla and Braian Ojeda for Juan Jose Caceres.

Germany look confident as full-time nears

Havertz is denied a second goal in the 78th minute after a brilliant save from Paraguay’s Orlando Gill. It follows a breakaway moment for Paraguay in the 77th when Gustavo Caballero flies solo towards Germany’s goal, but he’s tackled before he can shoot and his run was ruled offside anyway.

As the end of regular time draws close, Germany look to be in a better position to score a winning goal. But, remember, Paraguay managed to stay 1-0 up against Turkey, defending for an entire half with just 10 men. They also finished 0-0 with Australia. So they won’t be giving up any time soon.

There will be five minutes of stoppage time.

Germany equalise, injury blow for Paraguay

By

Germany have equalised just before the hour mark and, like Paraguay’s goal, it comes from a header.

It’s a stunning cross from Florian Wirtz and Kai Havertz gets there just in time to get a touch on it and send the ball into the bottom-right corner of the goal.

Paraguay’s bad luck spell continues as Enciso gets injured and has to be substituted. That’s a huge blow for them. He’s replaced with Mauricio.
