The search for a man who went overboard from a cruise ship off the Queensland coast has been suspended after almost four days.
An alert was raised that a man in his 70s had gone overboard from Carnival Splendor about 2am on Saturday, north-east of Moreton Island, sparking an extensive, multi-agency air and water search.
It was believed the man jumped from the ship about 10.30pm on Friday.
“The male guest was travelling with family, who alerted the ship’s crew of a possible missing person,” a Carnival spokeswoman said on Saturday.
“A review of the CCTV footage confirmed the guest’s action.”
His disappearance came after a 67-year-old woman from Tasmania died earlier that day while snorkelling near Moreton Island, though the two incidents were not believed to be linked.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority, police, coast guard, and volunteer services were joined by commercial vessels and aircraft in the search.
On Saturday, an AMSA spokesperson said two jets, five helicopters and six surface vessels were involved in the search.
A police spokesperson said on Tuesday the search could resume if further information regarding the man’s disappearance arises.
“Officers continue to be in contact with the man’s family, who have been advised of this update,” the spokesperson said.
