6am A large glass of filtered water while breastfeeding my newborn.

7am Breakfast is always my favourite smoothie: blueberries, avocado, banana, grass-fed whey protein, peanut butter, milk and ice. I also take a prenatal vitamin.

9am During work, I have a hot matcha. I try to drink at least two litres of water a day.

12.30pm Brussels sprout and kale slaw with honey pecans, dried cranberries and pumpkin seeds, topped with leftover chicken schnitzel.

3pm A hot cocoa drink and a caramel chocolate.

6pm Dinner is slow-cooked bolognese with pappardelle. I always try to make a meal all the family can eat, focusing on key wholefoods.

7pm I finish the day with a sleepy tea and one of my homemade cookies. I take magnesium glycinate at night for muscle recovery.

Dr Joanna McMillan says:

Top marks for… A beautifully balanced wholefoods approach with plenty of variety, healthy fats and plant foods. The kale, Brussels sprouts, seeds and berries provide a terrific mix of fibre and antioxidants, while eating regularly is so important when breastfeeding as you’re consuming so much energy.

If you keep eating like this you’ll… Be giving both yourself and your newborn a strong nutritional foundation. The variety of colourful plant foods, healthy fats and protein across the day should help support recovery, energy and milk production during a physically and emotionally demanding stage of life.

Why don’t you try… Swapping the whey protein in your smoothie for Greek yoghurt. You’ll still get plenty of protein, but with the added benefits of calcium and other nutrients that come naturally packaged in dairy foods. I’d also make sure your supplements include iodine and omega-3 DHA, as both are especially important for baby’s brain and nervous system development while breastfeeding.
