Track Heavy 8 and rail True
Race 1
2. Naadra can bounce back hard here after not getting the best of rides in group 2 company at her second start. Has plenty of ability, and back 100m in distance to midweek company is a huge plus. First time on rain-affected ground, but is bred to handle it. 1. She’s Extra is a promising Newcastle juvenile who has bolted in both starts so far, the latest careering past by more than three lengths at Warwick Farm on a Soft 7, and maintains a 3kg claim to off-set the weight hike.
How to play it: Naadra to win
Race 2
2. Lontrice is a promising son of D’Argento, resuming for just his second start behind two progressive soft track trials. Was sound on debut at Canterbury in spring beaten only a half-length, and is set to return a much stronger galloper with winkers going on. Well over the odds. 6. Metallic Cat was good on debut for the Waterhouse-Bott stable when only collared late on Soft 7 ground. Was $3.70 into $3.40 that day, and likely to go off a short priced favourite here, although shapes under the odds.
How to play it: Lontrice to win
Race 3
8. Portico is a well-bred colt by prolific wet track sire Exceed And Excel who can make a big statement on debut at great odds for the Michael Freedman stable. Fitted with three home trials, the latest coming over from wide out and showing impressive cruising speed to win by nearly three lengths. 2. Under Focus is an emerging provincial-based colt who led for a long way on debut at Warwick Farm in soft ground. Keep very safe 3. Drumfire who is trained on the course, and reloads 17 days after sweeping home from a close trail to win a country maiden on debut. 6. Lafite is a big betting watch on debut with gear additions for the Chris Waller yard behind two improving trials, the latest chasing home Moscow Maid who goes around as a serious chance in the fillies edition, and is bred to relish heavy ground.
How to play it: Portico each way
Race 4
3. Grand Prairie is an improving home track colt well-placed to strike second-up. Tackled Listed and Group 3 company in two runs late spring before spelling, then returned to miss by a whisker fresh at Warwick Farm when ridden forward. Both career wins so far have come in soft going. 9. Hay Street is a progressive three-year-old stepping up significantly in class off an all-the-way second-up maiden win at Rosehill as a hot favourite 4. Hezdarnhottoo is drawn right alongside the top selections, and comes back a grade after an even effort in a BM 84 at Flemington second-up. 6. Mafia resumes off a provincial trial win.
How to play it: Grand Prairie to win
Race 5
5. Just Maz is a tough and emerging filly right at home on rain-affected ground, and can make it three straight wins this campaign. Went home best to claim her maiden two starts back before a freshen, then powered home to win a BM 64 at Warwick Farm. The second-placed horse from that race rubber-stamped the form, bolting in at Kembla on a wet track last Saturday, and she looks suitably placed carrying 1kg less for the rise in grade. 1. Azarax has ability, and is each way value third-up after being beaten less than a length in the Listed Canberra Guineas. 2. Rivendell is lightly raced, and was right behind the former in that Guineas third-up. Winkers go on, and he’s already a winner in heavy going.
How to play it: Just Maz to win
Race 6
4. Horseshoe Hill is an emerging filly well-placed coming back to Wednesday company second-up against the girls. Caught the eye when working home late in the Listed Fireball at Randwick 18 days ago, and drawn to get cover off speed. Bred to get further and will be strong late. 2. Surf’s Up is a talented filly who naturally handles wet tracks, resuming behind two progressive trials, and was scratched from a stronger race earlier in the meeting. 3. Southern Heiress is an honest filly right in the mix on her preferred going.
How to play it: Horseshoe Hill to win
Race 7
5. Kenmare Bay is a tough four-year-old banging on the door 26 days between runs. Has been a bit stiff in running in his last two at Canterbury, finishing hard against similar opposition, and he thrives on rain-affected ground. 3. Cap Saint Martin is an Irish-bred three-year-old well-placed, stepping up a furlong in trip second-up since last August, and having only his second outing for the Annabel and Rob Archibald yard. Was a dominant winner in Ireland over further last August before spelling, and then heading Down Under. Impressed when fresh charging home from well back into a place at Warwick Farm in similar company.
How to play it: Kenmare Bay to win
Race 8
9. Spirit Of Camelot is a sparingly raced mare who can claim an overdue fifth career win and take her strike rate to 33 percent from 15 starts. Hasn’t won for nearly a year, but did react well off a long break when doing her best work late over too short a trip first-up at Canterbury. Then dropped in grade and missed by a whisker when ridden much closer at Warwick Farm. Primed to peak now over further, and the top jockey takes over. 7. Monte Veebee is a threat drawn the inside gate, although he’s done nothing but chew up punters’ money in three consecutive runs as a short-priced favourite after bolting in at the provincials two months ago.
