‘Smart call’: Pendlebury says ankle injury is nothing to worry about
By Roy Ward
Magpies great Scott Pendlebury will try to play next week after pulling up with ankle soreness during tonight’s match.
Pendlebury was removed from the game in the early third term with what was described as Achilles tightness but Pendlebury said the issue comes from an ankle issue suffered in recent weeks which flared up again.
“It wasn’t a concerned look, we just made the smart call,” Pendlebury told Fox Footy.
“I hurt my ankle against Adelaide, it got tight again in that area and we were out by 25 points, so we just said we don’t need to push it here when we have a six-day break.
FT: Collingwood 13.9 (87) d GWS Giants 7.12 (54)

Another Nick Daicos masterclass has led a frugal Collingwood side to a big win over GWS Giants.
Daicos put on one of the best individual performances of the season but the true standout was the Magpies’ team defence which kept the inexperienced Giants to just seven goals.
Scott Pendlebury’s Achilles injury will be a concern but he looks like he will be back soon enough.
Stringer kicks 400 career goals
By
Giants veteran Jake Stringer has snapped a goal to bring up his 400th AFL goal.
He didn’t celebrate too much, considering the Giants are just minutes from another loss but it is a special milestone.
Pies 87, GWS 54 with two mins to play.
A special night from Nick
By Danny Russell
“Three votes, Nick Daicos, Collingwood.”
The Magpie superstar is a rolled gold certainty to top the Brownlow votes in this game.
He has been without peer, closing on 40 possessions and has booted two goals.
Lachie Whitfield and Clayton Oliver have both had 30-plus disposals for the Giants, but have not been in the same class as Daicos.
The Pies are home

Chalk up four points, Magpie fans. That’s the ball game.
Not that the home side really needed a sealer because it was going to take a small miracle for the Giants to pinch this game in the final term.
It was not the score difference that was unachievable; it was the fact that the Giants could not score.
They have had a stack of the ball, leading the Magpies in kicks and handballs, but could not penetrate Collingwood’s well-drilled back line.
As we said earlier, defence is not dead in 2026.
Membrey has booted his fourth goal just to add to the margin.
Houston boots a distance goal
By
Dan Houston has loaded up a thumping kick from outside 50m and it has sailed through the goals.
That should seal the win and it’s the 12th goal for the Magpies, a mark they haven’t reached in their earlier games this season.
Pies 81, GWS 47 with nine mins to go.
Elliott, Thomas trade goals
By
Jamie Elliott pushed the lead out further and the Pies looked poised to run away with the game but the Giants finally found a way to break through the defensive formation with Jesse Hogan finding Harvey Thomas who kicked the goal.
They have a long way to go to get back into this match.
Pies 74, GWS 46 with 14 mins to play.
Pies, McStay fire up
By
Nick Daicos hit Dan McStay on the chest to start the final term and he marked it and then converted the set shot.
McStay missed a tougher shot a few moments later but the depleted Giants are continuing to struggle with Collingwood’s defensive pressure.
Pies 67, GWS 40 with 17 mins left to play.
Pies defence is keeping them on top
By
Collingwood are showing that defence is not dead.
As this year’s season went into hyperdrive across the opening rounds, with fast, slick footy and scores continually breaking the ton, the Magpies have put the breaks on at Marvel Stadium against GWS.
They have kept the Giants to five goals across the first three quarters and only managed nine, themselves.
